I’m humming…

This space will feature songs that I’ll be listening to at any given point of time, going by what catches my ear drums!

Since I’m a sucker for old hindi classics, those are what will be mentioned here more often. And sometimes, you will be treated to some Malayalam,English and other regional songs as well, depending upon the mood that I’m in. So hum along with me and enjoy! πŸ™‚

Opening this year’s juke-box with this beautiful number I heard recently from the film Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola sung and composed by Vishal Bhardwaj and penned by Gulzar πŸ™‚

Soli, Hitchy, if not for you this page of mine would have died a natural death long back. Thank you guys for prodding and pushing me always to keep it alive! I hope to be more regular this year in updating this page. That is not to say that you have to stop poking me, ok! πŸ˜€

I cant believe that I am updating this page after almost a year and a half!

Here’s a perfectly hummable song that brings a smile, cheers my heart and takes me back to those days when, if R & I had had a Facebook account our status would have read ‘Just Married’ ;)! A song superbly rendered by Kishore Kumar, composed by Rajesh Roshan and penned by Yogesh for a very very cute film ‘Priyatama.

Look out for the large-thick-black-rimmed Asha Sachdev with a very smitten look on her face…she looks so so sweet here! πŸ™‚

After 3 months of being away, I’m updating this page with a song that I grew up listening to. Its a song that always left me dreamy-eyed, partly for the beautiful lyrics and rendition and partly for the dashing ‘Sunil Dutt’. Its from the movie ‘Chhaya’, composed by Salil Chowdhury, penned by Rajinder Krishan and sung soulfully by Talat Mahmood & Lata Mangeshkar. Hum along and drool at Sunil Dutt πŸ˜€

Its been composed by Illayaraja. The lyrics have been written by Bichu Thirumala. And its been sung by the ‘Gaana Gandharvan’ himself, KJ Yesudas and the legendary S Janaki.

Today I’m sharing a Malayalam song, a song I absolutely love. More than the lyrics its the music that fascinates me here. Although the song has been sung by two ladies, KS Chitra & Gayathri, the voice of the legendary Chitra clearly stands out for me. The song, from ‘Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal’, has been penned by Kaithapram and classically composed by Illayaraja.

I’ve updated this page after a long time. The sing that I’ve shared here is something that I heard a couple of days back. It made me nostalgic purely because I used to listen to this song a lot when small. All the songs of this movie have been masterpieces, but this particular one has magic in its lyrics and composition.
Its a song from the movie Umrao Jaan, sung by Talat Aziz and composed by Khayyam. The lyrics have been penned by Shaharyar.

Mausam is a movie I can watch any number of times. It is one of those movies which moves me to tears every time I watch. The music is as soul-stirring as the story and the performances. Here I’m sharing two songs from the movie that have the same lyrics penned by Gulzar but different compositions by Madan Mohan.
This one is a happy version and

This song is one of my favourites from a non-film category. Its sung by Lata Mangeshkar and composed by her brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar. The song always brings out the spiritual side in me.

Yesterday,I was watching an interview of Lata Mangeshkar on CNN-IBN.Every time I watch her talk,I get gooseflesh,I well up,I dont know why.She sounds melodious, magical not only when she sings but when she talks also. She IS the nightingale of our country.

Although my personal favourite is Asha Bhonsle, her sister and closest rival, there are certain songs she has sung that noone else could have done justice to,not even her sister. One of them is what I’ve attached here. Its from the movie Kinara, lyrics of which have been beautifully penned by Gulzar and composed by the greatest RD Burman. The legendary Lata Mangeshkar has sung this song with the ghazal maestro Bhupendrer Singh.Hear it to feel the magic in the words, music and the voices behind them πŸ™‚ !

This is a classic composition by RD Burman which is one of my favourites too.Gulzar, the director/lyricist of te movie,Ijaazat, has woven words beautifully into this song and created sheer magic.

********************************************************************************

Solilo, this is what came to my mind instantly when I read your question. And this is one song which always touches a chord in my heart.Believe me,even now as I’m listening to it while I type these words,I’m welling up!

********************************************************************************

Here is another one of my favourite Malayalam songs which takes me to a nostalgic trip each time I hear.

********************************************************************************

Now lets listen to this classic piece from the film ‘Andhi’ and enjoy, people. Suchitra Sen & Sanjeev kumar were a treat to watch in this movie. And this particular song seemed as though no one could have been picturized better in it,but them. The song, sung by the versatiles Kishore Kumar & Lata Mangeshkar,is yet another work of RD Burman-Gulzar duo.

As for my favourite,’Aayiram kannumaayi’ will always hold a special place in my heart.I dont know if I’ve told you,its a song that I sang for the very first time on stage, when I was 5years old!And I love the other one as much for its sheer melody and nostalgia. It has been sung by both Yesudas and S Janaki at two different occasions in the film and I love both their renditions πŸ™‚

While vacationing in Kerala, I watched this movie and also used to listen to this song in the radio at my grandparent’s place. LOVE it.

D: You know,Solilo, every time I watch the movie the relationship between Nadia Moydu & Padmini reminds me of mine with my Ammamma πŸ™‚ . Oh,I just love the movie!

‘Thenum vayabum’ I think I have heard but don’t like much. I mean no opinion as such. I think my mom likes that song.

D: I so want to you know,Solilo. I dont know if she has the inclination yet.But R & I are very keen that she learns some form of music though, vocal or instrumental, anything.

Peanut can’t speak in Malayalam but she sings ‘entu paranjaalum nee entethalle’ few lines to my mom because that’s the song mom sings to her often.

D: Awww.thats so sweeeeeet! Its so amazing, alle, when children form their own ways of associating a song with their dear ones πŸ™‚ .Its their way of telling how close they hold them to their hearts. do give lots of ummas to Peanutmolu !

I remember my mom teaching me ‘Tumbi va’..It was fun because I used to sing all wrong back then. πŸ˜€ wait let me post that movie song.

D: Oh yes I’ve heard this song many many times. I love it too πŸ™‚ .And know what,Namnam came running from her room just now, when I played the song…which does give me a positive sign πŸ˜€

Do you ‘Kanmani’ from Guna? I think Guna is Kamal Hassan’s one of the best. I loved the symbolism in the movie.

D: I’ve heard the song,Sols but havent seen the movie. Will pick it up the next time I go to the library. The humming in between the song has been done by Kamalhassan himself, isnt it? Its a beautiful song πŸ™‚

This song was shot inside dangerous Devils cave in Kodaikanal which was called Guna caves later because of the movie.

    D: Really??

Remember the Koidakanal trip that I mentioned in one of the posts A time for friends? Friends and I made sure to try going down this cave but it was tough. My friend slipped and got badly bruised. Then our driver had to rescue us. 😐

D: Oh Oh,I do remember reading the post, but dont remember the details now.will go and read the post again. That must have been quite an unfortunate trip I can imagine! You all must have vowed never to go back there, didnt you?

    Here is the song

    1. It was the best! We were 5 girls. 3 of us wanted to go way down. There were guys from many Indian colleges who reached there and were encouraging us. But since this friend was bruised we all had to climb back. We were a bit bruised too but at that age everything is adventurous. There is a warning and list of deaths in front of the caves.

We then actually traveled to every nook and corner of Kodai and also attended many camp fires πŸ˜‰ . Every college wanted us to be there. So couple of colleges came together and organized a huge camp fire..whole night singing and dancing. The guys from Alleppey medical college were most fun.

One of the best trips of my life.
